Valentine’s Day is all about romantic dinners, gorgeous red roses and indulgent chocolates for many?
Over Valentines Day weekend I will be exploring the fascinating Stewart Island with two great friends, a backpack, hiking boots & a sleeping bag. Ok, so has the Grinch stolen Valentine’s Day? Not at all! Passion comes in many forms! There is something wonderful and romantic (even if you aren’t with your loved one) about being out in the beautiful New Zealand countryside. Away from the trappings of everyday life, you become immersed in the distraction of scenery that will take your breath away.
Exercising in a gym, pushing weights and running many miles is a perfect fit for many people when it comes to exercise. But the secret to making exercise part of your life is about finding something you are passionate about. Tramping is one of my passions and it means I get to keep fit and shed calories, without even realising it, all while spending time with people who mean so much to me.
So there are two days to go before I leave to go! There has been quite a lot of planning done so far. The weather in the South Island of New Zealand can be very unpredictable and many have been lost or caught out by sheer lack of sufficient preparation.
The following is a must have list of things to take:
- Good quality tramping boots that have been broken in.
- Gloves, including a woollen pair
- Sun hats
- Warm sleeping bag (down or hollofil)
- Thermal vests and pants -
- Raincoat and over trousers – waterproof & windproof
- Portable stove & gas (small one)
- Cooking, drinking & eating utensils
- Drink Bottle
- Pot scrub and tea towel
- Matches/lighter in waterproof container
- Pot scrub & tea towel
- Candles & torch
- Toilet gear
- First aid kit
- Survival kit (include survival blanket, whistle, spare food)
Overall, remember to choose food, & clothes that roll into SMALL bundles, as you will have to carry everything!
Check out the Department of Conservation website for different tramps around the country and very useful tips and information.
So from me, Bronwyn, wish me luck!!
